Equity Fund Receives MacKenzie Scott Award

December 10, 2025

We’re incredibly grateful to share the news that the Climate and Clean Energy Equity Fund is among the organizations to receive a significant unrestricted gift from MacKenzie Scott this year. We are proud to join a cohort of award recipients that focus on mobilizing resources for equitable, community-led solutions to the climate crisis.

At a moment when climate justice and democracy-building efforts face unprecedented threats and our communities are under heightened attack, this one-time, eight-figure contribution will allow us to double down on state and local action as the most reliable pathways to build power for climate equity.

“MacKenzie Scott’s investment signals a major national recognition of what community leaders have long known: the pathway to a just, clean-energy future is built from the ground up, powered by community organizing and movement-aligned collaboration,” says Andrea Mercado, the Equity Fund’s President and CEO.

“As we deepen and expand our reach across states, we consider this a critical opportunity for philanthropy to align with community-rooted strategies and co-invest in infrastructure needed to deliver equitable climate solutions.”

This investment signals a major national recognition of what community leaders have long known: the pathway to a just clean-energy future is built from the ground up, powered by community organizing and movement-aligned collaboration.

Over the past year we’ve seen our grantees achieve extraordinary advances in each of our 14 states as they push forward climate policies that are grounded in economic and racial equity. These victories include pushing back on harmful data center developments, shutting down incinerators, securing multi-million dollar investments in state-level clean energy programs, and winning energy affordability measures that hold utilities accountable. Our partners have no intention of slowing down—indeed, they are rising to meet the moment.

We can expect to see more of this in the years to come as the Equity Fund deepens its engagement with our long-standing partners in local communities, expands our work into Ohio and seizes new strategic opportunities. Like the multiyear, flexible grants we provide our grantees, these new resources are unrestricted, so we can invest where the need and opportunity are greatest.
